inside outside

These pieces began in the summer of 2019. I continued working on this series in 2020 as I spent a lot of time inside thinking about the outside.

When I heard Quiet City, we had recently gone into shelter in place. The song evoked a sense of longing. Nostalgia and hope hit me all at once. My memories are highly spatial and perhaps my imagination of the future is too. So I intended to create a sense of the collisions of past, future, internal and external sight and feel in this collaborative piece.

possible creatures

What exactly are we creating? What has been created? What will come in its place? What is being destroyed?

I invite you to imagine a possible future with all its creatures, features, spaces and crevices.

These are digital drawings based on watercolor drawings I made and hung in my windows during the initial COVID-19 lockdown in California in March and April of 2020.

I also created this black and white printable booklet you can use to color, draw or write about possible creatures from the same images.

proteas

Abstraction, nature and color play.

I started drawing this shape around 2016 and I didn’t know that they were proteas at the time, but now I do. Proteas are the national flower of South Africa and symbolize change and transformation across cultures.

The 16-piece series of prints was made with a reductive block print process. The prints were pressed by hand, creating a lot of variety in the images of each pressed protea. There are four color themes and four posters (18x24”) in each theme, all on high quality paper. Each color theme has a poster with 2, 4, 8, and 20 proteas.

The paintings were made by layering block prints of the outlines from the protea print series. The protea print images are stacked on top of one another and the spaces created are painted with acrylics. There are two 11x13.5'“ paintings, one 18x24” painting, and a few small 4x6-ish” paintings, all on high quality paper.

something

Collage is all about something, often a lot of extra something. If I feel compelled to make a collage, it is probably because there is too much of something and the act is a rapid and enjoyable way to physically remove it.

whose space

This was a quick series of 360-degree “self portraits” taken in 2018 when I got curious about what it might look like to be a shirt in my closet or an apple in my fridge.

You can download the images and view them in google cardboard to place you squarely within the perspective of my household items.
